We have a check to be deposited to a customer’s account where it appears it is related to a loan, it says “read the note” at the top, so it looks like a check a company sends to fund a loan. The account holder mentioned that they received the check unexpectedly. I know we cannot place a reasonable cause to doubt hold due to a check being of a particular class or type of check, but does the fact that the account holder stated the check was unexpected support the reasonable doubt exception hold reason?

From Regulation CC expert Deb Crawford of Gettechnical, Inc: “If you have a belief that it is fraud due to markings on the check, you could hold it. And you have customer conversation.”
