Orlando, FL
The American Bankers Association (ABA) really knows how to throw a party. The 2012 American Bankers Association Regulatory Compliance Conference (RCC) is in Orlando. This is the 26th year the ABA has presented the conference
Orlando is hot and humid this time of year, but when you sit in sessions from early morning until well into the evening the chill from the air conditioning is the bigger concern
A beautiful hotel – The Swan and the Dolphin Hotels sit side-by-side, connected by a walkway over a lagoon. Water taxis wait at the dock to transport you throughout the Disney parks. The RCC is held in the extensive convention facilities of the Dolphin Hotel.
More than 1,300 guests – Bankers from all over the US have gathered for this event. Many attendees came early or plan to stick around for a few days after the program to enjoy the wonders of Disney World. Quite a few brought families. It is pretty much impossible to take advantage of the many benefits of the RCC and to spend any significant time with your family.
50 presentations – I regularly conduct full-day training programs, but it is not often that I sit through a full-day training session. I forgot how exhausting it is to sit all day long. With this number of topics everyone, no matter what your area or level of expertise, can find topics of interest.
105 presenters – All of the sessions are presented by a panel of presenters. On Sunday all of the presenters appeared to know their topics and possessed adequate presentation skills. The most impressive speakers were the presenters on the topic of Current Compliance Issues in Mortgage Lending.
Program Highlights – One interesting discussion involved the concept that the compliance officer needs to have leadership skills, maybe to the exclusion of detailed knowledge of the regulations. The possibility that detailed compliance knowledge needs to be resident in the business line managers makes sense, but the conversation is more beneficial when both compliance and the business line have the detailed knowledge of the topic.
